Methods of Rekeying
There many types of padlocks and locks that are used to ensure that doors, safes and other lockable things are secured and there must be a keys to do the unlocking of them and in many cases these keys may be lost or get misplaced and there is need for rekeying.
When rekeying a lock there is a replacement of the pins that were there before with some new ones and the locks are normally done so to either master-key or re-key so as to stop any keys getting compromised.
Pins of the lock may be worn out and they require replacement with ones and there are cases where the pins may get shorter and cannot reach the shear-line and so when the key is used it cannot open the locks.
Most keys are cut in special manner and cannot be used to open other locks that are not similar and thus there is need to know what kind of key is to be made for a particular lock and many manufacturers give specific manuals for each particular lock and key.
A locksmith who is an expert may be able to use a bit and remove the old pin so as to replace them with new pins and the key that was previously used cannot be used again and a new key with new shape that fits in the new pins are specially made to do so.
Some depth that is specific allows a space for the master-key of a new key which is manageable for the utilized.
Rekeying needs some pin kits which have springs, top-pins, master wafers which go to the cylinder so that to enable a new key to be used and not all types of keys may be used in any kind od of lock and some have to be custom made.
Rekeying must be done by disabling the system and removing all pins and the springs and the pins which are in the chamber must be pushed in place so as to know if the key turns the lock.
Each pin seats on its own and the correct size of the pin must be put in the proper place so that they rest in flush with the shear-line and if the springs are weak they must be replaced with new stronger ones but if they are just dirty then washing them is necessary.
New springs are replaced with worn out ones and then they can be placed correctly in the unused chambers the new cut key may be inserted and with some minor adjustments and reassembling key may be turned to see if it turns the key.
Locksmiths are very well versed in this complicated art and they are able to rekey any type of key including keys that are meant to open bank safes, car keys, home keys, pad lock keys and any other key that one might think of.
Locksmiths are experts who are well versed in making new keys and it does not matter what kind of lock it is.
